Pages

Overview

Pages in Backstage allows you to manage and organize the layout of your app's homepage and other key landing pages. This feature provides the tools to control what content is displayed to users, in what order, and with what visual presentation across different platforms (mobile, tablet, and TV). Effective Home Page Content management ensures users can easily discover new content and navigate to their favorite programs.

Home Page Content is the primary way to control the user experience of your application, allowing you to showcase featured content, create thematic groupings, and highlight new releases or special events.

Home Page Configuration

Configuring pages in Backstage allows you to develop specialized content experiences for different contexts. This feature gives you the flexibility to craft unique page layouts without disrupting your existing content structure.

Managing Home Page Content

  1. Go to the left side of your screen and click on the "Pages" tab.

  2. You will see a screen displaying your current page layouts. Click on the page title to edit.

  3. From this screen, you can perform several actions:

    • Reposition rails by hovering over the dots on the left and dragging them up or down

    • Delete rails by clicking the trash can icon next to each rail

    • Add new rails by clicking the "Add" button at the top of the screen

    • Define rail style on apps e.g. 16x9-NoTitle or TopTen

Note: Rail Styles are only applicable if using pre-defined curation presets

  4. To add a new rail to the homepage:

    • Click the "Add" button and select "Feeds" from the dropdown

    • Make sure you're in the correct network by checking the network dropdown

    • Search for the feed/rail you want to add and click on it

    • Click the "Add" button at the bottom of the screen

    • The rail will be added to the bottom of the list - drag it to your preferred position

    • Choose rail format

  5. To edit an existing rail's content, you'll need to navigate to the related Playlist and make adjustments there.

Position Locking

The Position Lock feature allows you to fix certain rails in place on your homepage, preventing them from being moved during reorganization:

  1. Each rail has a "Position Lock" toggle on the right side of the screen.

  2. When enabled, the rail will remain in its current position regardless of other changes to the homepage.

  3. This is particularly useful for:

    • Featured carousels that should always appear at the top

    • Continue Watching and My List which should always be present if supported

    • Important promotional rails you want to keep in prime viewing positions

    • Special event or seasonal content that needs consistent placement

  4. To lock a rail's position, simply click the toggle switch next to the rail you want to fix in place.

  5. To unlock a previously locked position, click the toggle again to disable the lock.

Once you've made all your desired changes to the homepage layout, click "Save & Publish" to apply your changes.

Scheduling an Page

The Page feature allows you to prepare content layouts in advance and have them automatically go live at predetermined times. This is particularly valuable for seasonal promotions, special events, or time-sensitive content pushes.

Important Notes

  • You can only schedule an inactive page for future activation

  • Making a page inactive can be achieved by either scheduling the "Go Live" date in the past or deleting the page entirely

  • Backstage currently only supports one HPC being active simultaneously. Other HPCs can still be created and curated, but only one will be active at a time

How to Schedule a Page

  1. After creating your page (as described in the previous section), navigate to the "Pages" tab.

  2. Locate your Home Page in the list and click on the edit icon in the Actions column.

  3. In the scheduling interface, you can set:

    • Go Live (CT): When the page should automatically become active

      • This date field uses Central Time (CT) as the standard. Ensure you account for this when scheduling.

  4. For seasonal content (like holiday promotions), you can create a themed page and schedule it to appear during the relevant period. For example:

    • Create a Christmas-themed homepage with holiday content rails

    • Schedule it to go live 10 days before Christmas

    • Schedule the normal homepage to go live on December 28th

  5. Click "Save" to confirm your scheduling settings.

  6. The system will display scheduled pages with a SCHEDULED status

  7. Once scheduled, the system will automatically activate the SCHEDULED page and deactivate the ACTIVE page at the specified time without requiring manual intervention.
